Joining a World of Warcraft raiding
guild is where all the glory lies.
If your WoW ambitions include
belonging to a top echelon guild, then
you need to start by finding a quality
guild at your current level, and working
daily to make yourself a key raider.
Don't start your application process
with the Premonition or the Horde, you
have to work your way into those
guilds while improving your raiding
skills and proving your value as a
player along the way. You need to be
a master at the game before you finally
apply to a top level guild since they operate very much like a professional sports team and will be constantly monitoring your progress and watching your stats.
Consistently meeting the expectations of such a guild is hard work and can be highly stressful. To begin with, don't even worry about how you stack up against the other players; you need to focus your energies on improving your skills so your goal should be joining a guild where that is possible. You do need to keep in mind these strategies for attracting gamers you want to play with, differentiating yourself from the crowd, and finding the perfect guild.
Of course the best way to get into any guild is being able to prove you're
the type of player they want on their team. The only way you can become an experienced raider is by raiding, so the earlier you join a Pickup Group (PuG), the faster you'll acquire the skills you need to advance. You will learn the details of various instances and develop valuable skills in a PuG while you learn what is expected of a top tier guild raider.
Go for the glory -- concentrate on defeating the hardest tasks and acquiring the greatest achievements. Show off -- play solo and rack up as many unassisted achievements as you. A major accomplishment would be completing all of the quests in the Eastern Kingdom or Kalimdor before Cataclysm ensues and changes the landscape. Aside from just being at the top of your game, there are a number of other strategies you need to employ in marketing yourself to a raiding guild.
First and foremost, join the guild forums and participate
in the current discussions.
Networking isn't just for RL, the techniques that land
you a great job are the same techniques that could land
you in a great guild, get to know the raiders of the guild
you want to join. Referrals are an excellent way to get yourself noticed by a guild and having the right friends and contacts is what helps you climb to the top.
That's why you need to seek out guild forums, talk about what matters most to the guild, and provide intelligent cometary on the discussions. Remember, the guildies are your potential team mates so arrogance, put downs and snide remarks will likely turn them off and turn them against you; on the other hand, don't fawn over them either, just be yourself.
Once you decide you're ready to approach a top tier guild for membership, be prepared to prove yourself. You will have to eat, sleep and drink WoW: WoW guildies and WoW conversations will fill your nights and days. Even so, if it finally lands you that coveted spot in a top tier raiding group, the honor and glory that comes with it will be more than an ample reward.
